When to Choose Independent or Assisted Living

Independent and assisted living facilities can offer individuals the opportunity to maintain high levels of independence while receiving the care they need to improve their quality of life. Here are a few signs that may help determine if you or someone you love is ready to transition to assisted living:

  • Daily tasks are becoming increasingly “difficult”
  • Significant changes in weight loss or appetite
  • Decreased mobility and/or trouble getting around
  • Personal appearance and/or hygiene are lacking (showering, combed hair, teeth brushed, etc.)
  • The house is unclean and/or laundry is piling up
  • Loneliness or need for socialization
  • Lack of motivation or interest
  • Can no longer drive or can no longer drive safely
  • Having difficulty managing medications
  • One spouse can no longer care for the other as his/her health declines

We encourage families to have ongoing discussions with loved ones and evaluate when additional assistance may be appropriate. It is important to address these issues sooner rather than later.

We understand this is a very difficult decision. We would love to explore all the options independent and assisted living can provide you.
